Ski Apache and Lincoln National Forest
In June look for the deep purple flowers and five-lobed leaves of Sierra Blanca lupine (Lupinus sierrae-blancae) along the road. Look for the tall, funnel-shaped, dark-purple flowers of the New Mexico larkspur (Delphinium novomexicanum) in spring. Gray-footed chipmunks (Tamius canipes) can be seen scampering around at the rest stops. Highway 380 begins at highway 48 from Ruidoso and winds upward toward the Ski Apache ski basin. Many lookout points and picnic areas as well as trailheads occur along Highway 380. Bring warm clothing and rain gear for high-altitude weather.
